After the early snow storm that Northern Illinois received it seemed for a week or so that the geese did not fly very well in this area. Once the weather started to warm the geese started moving again, and were using one of the cut corn fields that I have permission to hunt. I called a couple of friends to see if they would like to join me for an afternoon hunt.
After setting up it didn't seem to take the geese very long to start flying. The first flock worked well right into the decoys. We dropped four birds and proceeded to go and pick up the birds. I had brought a band off a Deadfowl Canadian Goose that I use at the kennel to teach the gundogs how to handle a goose. I thought I would be funny and place the band on one of the geese that Bill or Tim shot. I got to the first goose picked it up and dug the fake band out of my pocket. As I went to put it on the goose I noticed that the goose had a band on it! Well I thought I will just go to the next goose and put the fake band on that one. The only problem with the joke, was this goose was also banded!!! It kept getting better as Tim told me that the goose he got was banded, and Bill's bird was as well. All four geese were banded!!!

After picking up, we went back to the kennel took a couple of pictures and cleaned the birds. We were discussing where the birds were from, and finally decided they were probably banded a short distance from where we had shot them. After getting the band information back all four of the geese were actually banded in Ontario, Canada.

In all, not a bad days hunt. Three hunters limits of geese, four banded birds, and good some company out in the field!
